I just called the Birmingham Police, and they told me that the only way they will track down the guy is if I am willing to press charges and an investigation is conducted. I told them that if that is the only way to find the person who hit me, then I am willing to press charges and that I can possibly identify him. So they are now going to do an investigation, and they will get back to me once they find out something.

I did clip out of both pedals. I was already free of the bike by the time I was sommersaulting through the air. I don’t, however, remember clipping out. I must have just done it instinctively. My groin area is a bit sore which might be from twisting both legs very quickly to clip out. I don’t consciously remember doing that, though.

Praise the Lord that you were wearing a backpack and that you were able to get the license plate #. How scary! You’re a trooper Brian. Most people who go through something like that never want to ride again. Question- Did your feet clip out of your pedals when you went flying? I only wonder because I fell while riding last week and the bike came with me (feet did not clip out) and fell on top of me. It’s kind of a freaky experience because you feel trapped. How do you avoid this?

The most important thing I could recommend to anyone is NEVER ride on the sidewalk. You’ll see that reiterated over and over again on the bicyclesafe.com website and I concur wholeheartedly.

I forgot to mention that the accident I was involved in was a more serious version of “The Left Cross”. It’s collision #6 on the bicyclesafe.com website. Mine was more serious because the driver was not making a 90 degree turn into me, but rather speeding trying to cut the corner at a more head-on angle. I was very lucky.

In light of this adventure, Hal and I are wondering about safe biking tips…. We’ve been riding alot more with our new bikes, and want to be safe. For instance, we didn’t know the little tip about riding further from the shoulder near intersections… what else should we know?

I’m so very thankful he’s ok too! *grumble, grumble*… not a vehicle?!? My husband rides more miles on his bike for work and in lieu of driving places than most people drive their “vehicle” in a week! If his bike isn’t a vehicle, what is it?? Hopefully, we’ll get something worked out, though…
