{"id":2029,"date":"2010-04-02T09:15:37","date_gmt":"2010-04-02T14:15:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.toonesalive.com\/blog\/family\/?p=2029"},"modified":"2010-04-02T09:15:37","modified_gmt":"2010-04-02T14:15:37","slug":"whats-cookin-easter-resurection-cookies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.toonesalive.com\/blog\/family\/?p=2029","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s Cookin&#8217;&#8230; Easter Resurection Cookies!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have always wanted to make these with the kids, but the Saturday before Easter just gets away from me.\u00a0 But I&#8217;ve got all the ingredients this year, and I&#8217;m even going to do our Easter Basket fun stuff tomorrow, so that Easter morning is all about the Resurrection.<\/p>\n<p>This recipe is many places, but I snagged it from<a href=\"http:\/\/blisstree.com\/eat\/easter-baking-resurrection-cookies-tell-the-story\/\" target=\"_blank\"> here<\/a>&#8230;(And as I was previewing it, I realized I may have posted it another year.\u00a0 Oh well!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resurrection Cookies<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 cup whole pecans<\/li>\n<li> 1 teaspoon vinegar<\/li>\n<li> 3 egg whites<\/li>\n<li> a pinch salt<\/li>\n<li> 1 cup sugar<\/li>\n<li> a zipper baggy<\/li>\n<li> 1 wooden spoon<\/li>\n<li> scotch tape<\/li>\n<li> Bible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>**Preheat oven to 300F.**<br \/>\nBefore you do anything else put the whole pecans in ziploc bags, and let your children beat them with a meat mallet, or hammers,\u00a0 to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested. He was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read John 19:1-3.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><sup id=\"en-NIV-26816\">1<\/sup>Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. <sup id=\"en-NIV-26817\">2<\/sup>The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe <sup id=\"en-NIV-26818\">3<\/sup>and went up to him again and again, saying, &#8220;Hail, king of the Jews!&#8221; And they struck him in the face.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><br \/>\nAllow each child to smell the vinegar.  Put 1 teaspoon vinegar into mixing bowl.\u00a0 Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><sup id=\"en-NIV-26843\">28<\/sup>Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, &#8220;I am thirsty.&#8221; <sup id=\"en-NIV-26844\">29<\/sup>A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus&#8217; lips. <sup id=\"en-NIV-26845\">30<\/sup>When he had received the drink, Jesus said, &#8220;It is finished.&#8221; With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><span> Add the egg whites to the vinegar.  Eggs represent life.  Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><sup id=\"en-NIV-26481\">10<\/sup>The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. <sup id=\"en-NIV-26482\">11<\/sup>&#8220;I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><span><span>Put a little of the salt into each child\u2019s hand.  Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. (If you have a lot of kids like I do put the pinch of salt INTO the bowl and then allow them to taste a little of\u00a0 salt or you will have too much salt in the recipe!) Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus\u2019 followers, and the bitterness of our own sin.\u00a0 Read Luke 23:27.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><sup id=\"en-NIV-25953\">27<\/sup>A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><span><span><span> So far the ingredients would not make a very good dessert!\u00a0 Add 1 cup sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read Psalm 34:8<span> and John 3:16.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><sup id=\"en-NIV-14397\">8<\/sup> Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"en-NIV-26127\">16<\/sup>&#8220;For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,<sup title=\"&quot;See\">[<a title=\"See footnote a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%203:16&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-26127a\">a<\/a>]<\/sup> that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks form.\u00a0 Explain that the color white represents the purity in God\u2019s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read Isaiah 1:18<span> and John 3:1-3.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"en-NIV-26112\">1<\/sup>Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. <sup id=\"en-NIV-26113\">2<\/sup>He came to Jesus at night and said, &#8220;Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.&#8221;<sup id=\"en-NIV-26114\">3<\/sup>In reply Jesus declared, &#8220;I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.<sup title=\"&quot;See\">[<a title=\"See footnote a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%203:1-3&amp;version=NIV#fen-NIV-26114a\">a<\/a>]<\/sup>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Fold in the broken nuts.  Drop by teaspoon onto waxed paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus\u2019 body was laid. Read Matthew 17:57-60.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><sup id=\"en-NIV-24184\">57<\/sup>As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. <sup id=\"en-NIV-24185\">58<\/sup>Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus&#8217; body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. <sup id=\"en-NIV-24186\">59<\/sup>Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, <sup id=\"en-NIV-24187\">60<\/sup>and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and<strong> turn the oven OFF<\/strong>.\u00a0 Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven door. Explain that Jesus\u2019 tomb was sealed. Read Matthew 27:65-66.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><sup id=\"en-NIV-24192\">65<\/sup>&#8220;Take a guard,&#8221; Pilate answered. &#8220;Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.&#8221; <sup id=\"en-NIV-24193\">66<\/sup>So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Now, go to bed. Explain that they may feel sad to leave the cookies in the oven overnight. Jesus\u2019 followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read John 16:20,22.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><sup id=\"en-NIV-26736\">20<\/sup>I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.<\/p>\n<p><sup id=\"en-NIV-26738\">22<\/sup>So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie.  Notice the cracked surface and take a bite.  The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter Jesus\u2019 followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read Matthew 28:1-9.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><sup id=\"en-NIV-24194\">1<\/sup>After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. <sup id=\"en-NIV-24195\">2<\/sup>There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. <sup id=\"en-NIV-24196\">3<\/sup>His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. <sup id=\"en-NIV-24197\">4<\/sup>The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. <sup id=\"en-NIV-24198\">5<\/sup>The angel said to the women, &#8220;Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. <sup id=\"en-NIV-24199\">6<\/sup>He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. <sup id=\"en-NIV-24200\">7<\/sup>Then go quickly and tell his disciples: &#8216;He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.&#8217; Now I have told you.&#8221; <sup id=\"en-NIV-24201\">8<\/sup>So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. <sup id=\"en-NIV-24202\">9<\/sup>Suddenly Jesus met them. &#8220;Greetings,&#8221; he said.
